Passage Picker MILOS

In this Literacy Circle I was Passage picker and my job was to see and look in what paragraph there are important parts or the parts that we dont need in the book. In this job the first paragraph i chose was chapter 9 and it was the first sentence in the first paragraph. I thought this paragraph explains a lot about what is the chapter going to be about and the first paragraph already predicted for us. My classmates agreed with me that it was very important.
The second paragraph i chose was a paragraph that didn't include any important information about the book. I think if there wasent this paragraph in this book that the book would stay the same because this paragraph dosent give any information. Again my friends said they agree with me because when they read through it also they saw it was useless.
The last paragraph i chose was because that particular paragraph was very helpful for us to predict because it told us what is going to be in the awaiting chapter and how the setting and place will be held. My group disagrees with me because they think it dosent say so much and is the most important paragraph because i think that without this paragraph we wouldn't know what the chapter is saying.

literary luminary-Dasha

 literary luminary

For this meeting we decided to read the chapters fifteen through twenty. The titles of these chapters were:

  • this way to infinity
  • a very dirty bird
  • unwelcoming committee
  • castle in the air
  • the return of rhyme and reason
  • good-by and hello
This was our last meeting for 6th grade, therefore we finished our book. The book was very entertaining and had a lot of dialogue , metaphors as well as alliteration. All of these qualities made the book very fun to read.
For this meeting I decided that I wanted to be the literary luminary the paragraphs I chose were

  • paragraph 2 page 197. The reason I chose this paragraph is because it had a lot of metaphors which caught my attention while reading it
  • paragraph 3 page 201. I chose this one because it was very funny and caught my attention while I was reading it.
  • paragraph 1 page 219. I liked the way the author used the dialogue to bring the story to life
  • paragraph 2 page 234. This paragraph was very silly which is why i enjoyed it and it caught my attention

1. When Milo felt so tired when they were on the stairs, he fell down because there were so many stairs. That reminded me of a time when   I was climbing up the stairs, and I got tired, I l also wanted to fall but I survived going to the very top.

2. The gentleman they met after the bird reminded me of slender man. He was tall , he wore a tie and a suit, but the thing that reminded me of slender man the most was the white mask on his face. But he was nice that's the only difference.

Madison - Illustrator - Chapters 15-20

For this literacy circles meeting, we read chapters 15-20, and I was the illustrator. I drew Milo's magic staff as I thought of it before they described the staff itself. I actually liked my magic staff much better than the one described in the book. ðŸ˜ƒðŸ˜ƒðŸ˜ƒ The magic staff saves Milo from a demon, who makes them do ridiculous tasks that take forever.

I drew a picture of Alec, Milo and the Humbug running through the forest. I drew this because I never got the chance to do this and I love when movies or books have this scene because I imagine it to be beautiful and it always creates tension when something goes wrong. For example: In the book they get lost.

 Connector-Dasha

connections:

-on page 58  paragraph 2  it says “for several minutes no one spoke an understandable sentence” because everyone was mixing up the order of the words in the sentences. This made me think of when say you are new in an international school and you do not speak English this is how it feels, everyone spoke to each but there was no sentence you could understand. This also made me think of when say you are on holiday in a new country and you can not understand a single word because of the fact that all of them are peaking in a different language

-on page 80 paragraph 2 it says “long hallway which glittered with crystal chandeliers” which made me think of real castles with ballrooms inside of which  there are gigantic crystal chandlers. It also reminded me of a castle which I visited where all the wall were covered with reflective mosaics as they glittered like diamonds.

The Phantom Tollbooth - Chapters 7-12 - Madison - Literary Luminary

For this Literacy Circle meeting, I was the Literary Luminary. I chose five paragraphs, each from a different chapter. The ones I chose were either strange, or had some sort of play on words. I hope that you enjoy these paragraph as much as I did. :)

Milo noticed many of the people he had seen in the market place. The letter man was busy explaining to an interested group the history of the W, and off in a corner the Spelling Bee and the Humbug were arguing fiercely about nothing at all. Officer Shift wandered through the crowd, suspiciously muttering, “Guilty, guilty, they’re all guilty,” and, on noticing Milo, brightened visibly and commented in passing, “Is it six million years already? My, how time flies.”

“Too much too quickly, too much too quickly,” wheezed the uncomfortable bug. “To be sure, too much too quickly, I most certainly should have eaten too little too slowly, or too much too slowly, or too little too quickly, or taken all day to eat nothing, or eaten everything in no time at all, or occasionally eaten something any time, or perhaps I should have---” And he toppled back, exhausted, into his chair and continued to mumble indistinctly.

“Well,” said the boy. “In my family, everyone is born in the air, with his head at exactly the height it’s going to be when he’s an adult, then we all grow toward the ground. When we’re fully grown up, or as you can say, grown down, our feet finally touch. Of course, there are a few of us whose feet never reach the ground no matter how old we get, but I suppose it’s the same in every family.”
Pg. 104 PG#9
“Do you know where we are?” ask Milo.
“Certainly,” he replied. “We’re right here on this very spot. Besides, being lost is never a matter of not knowing where you are; it’s a matter of not knowing where you aren’t-and I don’t care at all about where I’m not.”
Pg. 110 PG#2-3

All the flowers suddenly appeared black, the gray rocks became a lovely soft chartreuse, and even peacefully sleeping Tock turned from brown to a magnificent ultramarine. Nothing was the color it should have been, and yet, the more he tried to straighten things out, the worse they became.

In this job the job to do is illustrate a picture or a thought that you had from reading the book. The picture that i draw was when Milo was in the market place. It is a drawing of him and the lines in the background. The lines in the background represent the market place, words and different shops.

Importance of the watchdogs' role in preserving it as he and Milo approach the gates of Dictonopolis. Once inside Milos and Tock discover that it is market day day in the city and the square is filled with merchants selling all sorts of words and letters. Later, they meet the 5 royal advisers.
4)Milos and Tock explore the word market, looking over the shelves full of everyday words and fancy sounding words. The insect claims that he can spell almost any word and proves it by taking challenges. When Milo expresses his amazement at this skill, another insect, this one looking more like beetle, that is over and pronounces it Balderdash. dodging swing of the grumpy beetle's cane, the spelling Bee introduces him as a Humbug. Madison - Summarizer

For this Literacy Circles, I was the summarizer. The chapters we read were three through eight at this meeting. Here is my summarization and main points:

        Summary:
Milo and Tock explored the word market, meeting the Spelling Bee and the Humbug during their stay. The Spelling Bee and the Humbug get into a fight, leaving the market in chaos. Officer Shift arrives on the scene, and the Humbug tells him that Milo caused the predicament. Officer Shift then gives Milo a jail sentence of 6,000,000,000 years. Milo shared his cell with the Which, Faintly Macabre. She was the king's aunt, and was in charge of choosing what words people would use. Eventually, she limited it to no words at all and was stuck in jail. Milo vowed to get her out, if he lived out his sentence. Macabre told him that Officer Shift never checks on the prisoners, and that the big red button on the wall would let him out. Milo walked free with Tock, and they started toward the banquet.

Main Points:

  • Milo and Tock went to the word market
  • Spelling Bee and Humbug fought
  • Humbug blames Milo
  • Milo gets put in jail
  • The Which tells her story
  • Milo escapes jail
  • Heads to the banquet

Answers: A very show off character because she was always spelling things out. Simply a clever pun.
3. How was the tension when Milo was walking down the dark stairs?
Answers: It was very concerning and worrying because we didn't know what happened
4. What was your first idea of the witch?
Answers: very gruesome and evil but in the end she turned out to be a good guy.
5. If you were in this story what would your reaction to these chapters be?
Answers: I would be mad that I was thrown in jail and someone would probably get hurt.

\
The part of the story that I chose to draw was when officer Shift arrested Milo.
I believe that this is a very important part of this story because it is the turning point .It is what the whole chapter was going towards. The whole idea with the spelling bee was to have Milo arrested.this is the part where officer shift is sending Milo to jail.

Inger-Summarizer The Phantom Tollbooth

Literacy Circles

During this class, we were discussing the three first chapters of The Phantom Tollbooth  and I was the summarizer.

This was my summary:
Milo was always bored. he  went to his dull apartment and was bored. Then he saw a huge package with a bright blue envelope on it. There were instructions and he followed them. He ended up with a small car which he started to drive in a world called expectations. He met a person who talking only nonsense. He told him to go where ever he wants. He met two other people who ran away when the "Watchdog" came. Milo was worried at first but then they became great friends. They traveled to the great wall where they found a strange guard. They enter the wall and they found a place called the Word Market. He met many strange men inside.
